Dear Vesper Holly,

FIRST OF ALL...My god you are freakin amazing. How long did it TAKE you to write this all?

I agree with you on how much all us Harry Potter fans loved this series, and I've never met anyone as crazy as me about HP, so it was really very interesting to see how you depicted your views and your opinions and your perspective on the different parts of this book. It was a hilarious read! :)

I must disagree though with your hate for Ginny. She may not be the most suitable character for Harry, but I'd rather her over Cho ANY DAY. Cho's a whiny bitch.

Snape is insanely deep, but I never really noticed him. I mean, he was there, but it wasn't untill the seventh book that I truly understood the extent to which he had sacrificed himself (after Harry learns his existence in the Pensieve).

I also never really thought of how isolated the Slytherins were from the other Houses. Now that I think about it, they were always the villains. And there was never anyone who had a nice, plain, clean soul in Slytherin, but I wonder why, when in the first book the Sorting Hat told Harry he would do good in Slytherin, why JKR didn't tweak the prejudiced views of the Slytherins just a bit, that way they weren't constantly depicted as "the assholes".

I LOVE DOBBY! I CRIED WHEN HE DIED! I CRIED WHEN DUMBLEDORE DIED! AND WHEN HARRY WAS LOOKING INTO THE MIRROR OF ERISED AND HE SAW HIS FAMILY! AND WHEN SIRIUS DIED! AND WHEN FRED DIED (holy shit i cried!) and when all the bodies were laid out to rest.
It was the saddest, saddest, SADDEST scene I have ever pictured. Extremely heartbreaking.

I love how JKR makes everything so emotional and how there's different levels of emotion. and of course escaping from a bank guarded by viciously intelligent goblins on a f*cking dragon is SO EFFING BADASS!

ohehmgeeman. ok i'm going to wrap this up otherwise i'll go on for ages and ages and i won't shut up.

Thanks SO MUCH for sharing :)))

Here's a quote from JKR for you, this is on Harry and Ginny's relationship.

"The plan was, which I really hope I fulfilled, is that the reader, like Harry, would gradually discover Ginny as pretty much the ideal girl for Harry. She's tough, not in an unpleasant way, but she's gutsy. He needs to be with someone who can stand the demands of being with Harry Potter, because he's a scary boyfriend in a lot of ways. He's a marked man. I think she's funny, and I think that she's very warm and compassionate. These are all things that Harry requires in his ideal woman. But, I felt — and I'm talking years ago when all this was planned — initially, she's terrified by his image. I mean, he's a bit of a rock god to her when she sees him first, at 10 or 11, and he's this famous boy. So Ginny had to go through a journey as well… I feel that Ginny and Harry, in this book, they are total equals. They are worthy of each other. They've both gone through a big emotional journey, and they've really got over a lot of delusions, to use your word, together. So, I enjoyed writing that. I really like Ginny as a character."

JKR created the character of Harry Potter, and so she knows him more than we'll ever know. In another interview she's said that Harry Potter was a completely fictional character that she made up, she said however that some characteristics in Harry are found in her. And so when writing Ginny, yes she was a character on her own, but she was also created as "the ideal woman for Harry". And to be honest, I find it odd that you can see Harry and Luna in that light, she's a very good friend to Harry but they’re relationship goes no further (romantic wise). Several times throughout the series, some of Ginny's actions are described as being catlike. However, her personality does not reflect the style of her actions, as her Patronus is a horse instead of a cat. Don’t get me wrong, I love Luna Lovegood; I think she's very refreshing and you don't often come across characters like her. But I don't think she belongs with Harry...maybe Neville Longbottom, or Rolf Scamander (the actual guy she marries).

Oh, and I loved your review I agree that it helps clarify the book for me. Awesome job!

I've just stumbled on this review, and I thought it made a lot of very good points (even if I don't agree with it a 100%). I loved the Slytherin/Shylock comparison, for example.

Two things though:
- I get what you're saying about Slytherin inclusion in the book - nil. That indeed Slytherins are cast away since the beginning etc. However, I don't think you ought to be disappointed. In many, many ways, HP is NOT the perfect world. It is not "the world as it should be" - it's the world as it is, with all its flaws. We've learnt Dumbledore is not perfect either, and when he says "I think we sort too soon", yes he's showing prejudice but nobody said he wasn't. He's a wizard, from a wizarding family, who's been around for enough time to make up his mind about Slytherins. He doesn't hate them, but he does not have a good opinion of them. And it's also because if in the origin the House was meant for "cunning", "clever" and ambitious people, over time it also developed into a House for the bad people. And just WISHING to be in Slytherin is like admitting you are prejudiced. Maybe not forever, but at the time of the book, it is. It's how the House has evolved, not as it was intended. But surely a lot of people are prejudiced against, and not always for the right reasons, and it's this prejudice that condemns the House to be filled with bad people - it's a vicious circle. But once again, I don't think JKR wanted to excuse that, she was just being really realistic in the portrayal.

- I'm astonished that a shipper like you didn't have anything to say on Grindeldore. It was so fucking obvious to me when I read the book, I immediately wrote a fic about it. Then JKR confirmed it 2 months later, and the Potterdammerung finally happened. I was a bit disappointed you didn't have anything to add to the subject. Well, too bad ;-)

Thanks for the review anyway! (2 years later, but hey, hat's the internet for you)

I've read this review only about a million times. I love it. It's helped clarify the book for me, gotten me to re-read it (and it does get better every time), to think and to actually understand a hell of a lot more about it. I've linked it to only about a million people.

It's also inspired me and helped me find a focus for my 4000 word Extended Essay in which I'm tentatively thinking of looking at the significance of Snape's final words. That is if my teacher approves it and looks past the "Harry Potter = Children's Literature" label and accepts it as a true work of art and a great representation of human nature and what we are HUMANLY capable of at a time like that. We're human. Not saints. JK gets that. Look at Snape. Look at Draco. Harry, even, and his use of cruciatus.

And it also makes me miss fandom like no other, oh man.

Thank you <3

Well this is insanely late, but I postponed reading the last book due to school and just finished it today. I have to say, I'm so glad I looked for your review of the book because it makes me feel so much better that the things I loved about the book and also the things that bothered me also bothered other people. But more importantly, your comments about Snape and Draco give me a different view on the events in the book, which I desperately needed considering how little they were in the book. But yeah, pretty much agree with everything in your post, so THANK YOU for writing and sharing this, my heart feels better after reading it.
